Collagen II (COL2A1) is a type of fibrillar collagen primarily found in cartilage, where it plays a crucial role in maintaining the structural integrity and resilience of articular cartilage. It is the main structural component of hyaline cartilage, providing strength and elasticity to tissues that withstand mechanical stress, such as joints, intervertebral discs, and the vitreous humor of the eye. The COL2A1 gene encodes the pro-alpha1(II) chain, which assembles into a triple-helical collagen structure, forming the scaffold that supports the extracellular matrix. Collagen II is essential for normal cartilage development and function, and mutations in the COL2A1 gene are linked to skeletal disorders such as chondrodysplasias, including Osteoarthritis and Stickler syndrome, which can affect cartilage formation, joint function, and overall skeletal development.
