1931 年由尤勒（ U.S.von Euler ）和加德姆（ J.H.Gaddum ）发现的肽类，存在于脑及肠管组织中，有降血压和肠管收缩作用。 1971 年从丘脑下部分离出 P 物质的一种，确定了如下结构： Arg-Pro-Lys- Pro-Gln-Gln-Phe-Phe-Gly-Leu-Met-NH 2 。这种物质有使神经元兴奋的强力作用，一般认为与化学递质有密切关系。由于初次单独分离出来的状态是粉状物，故称 P 物质。
