Resistin is a protein primarily secreted by adipocytes (fat cells) and immune cells, such as macrophages. It is considered a cytokine and plays a role in the regulation of metabolism, particularly in insulin resistance and obesity. Resistin has been linked to inflammatory processes and the development of metabolic disorders, including type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular diseases. It is thought to act by impairing insulin signaling, leading to decreased insulin sensitivity in tissues such as muscle and liver. As a result, resistin has become a focus of research into the mechanisms underlying obesity-related diseases.
