    Cytokeratin 5 (K5) is a type of intermediate filament protein found primarily in the epithelial cells of the skin, as well as in other stratified epithelia. It plays a critical role in maintaining the structural integrity and mechanical strength of epithelial tissues by forming part of the cytoskeleton. K5 is often expressed in basal cells of the epidermis and is important for the resilience and flexibility of epithelial layers, especially in areas subjected to mechanical stress. As a marker of basal keratinocytes, cytokeratin 5 is widely used in research to study skin biology, wound healing, and certain epithelial cancers. Its expression is often studied in relation to conditions like epidermolysis bullosa and other skin disorders.
