Myelin basic protein (MBP) is a key structural protein found in the myelin sheath, which surrounds and insulates nerve fibers in the central nervous system (CNS) and peripheral nervous system (PNS). MBP plays a crucial role in the formation, stability, and maintenance of the myelin structure, facilitating the efficient transmission of electrical signals along nerve cells. It is highly abundant in oligodendrocytes (in the CNS) and Schwann cells (in the PNS), which are responsible for myelination. MBP is also involved in the process of myelination during development and in response to injury.
