IL-7 (Interleukin-7) is a cytokine that plays a critical role in the development, homeostasis, and function of the immune system, particularly in the generation and maintenance of T cells. It is produced by stromal cells in the bone marrow and thymus and is essential for the survival and differentiation of T lymphocytes during T cell development. IL-7 binds to the IL-7 receptor (IL-7R), composed of the IL-7Rα chain and the common γ-chain (γc), triggering signaling pathways that promote the survival, proliferation, and differentiation of naive T cells and memory T cells. IL-7 also influences the development of B cells and the maintenance of immune homeostasis. Due to its crucial role in immune cell development and function, IL-7 has been studied for its potential therapeutic applications in immunodeficiencies, autoimmune diseases, and cancer.
