Creatine is a nitrogen-containing compound that serves as a high-energy storage reservoir for rapid ATP regeneration. Approximately 95% of creatine is present in skeletal muscle, mainly phosphocreatine. Creatine can be obtained through dietary intake and can also be formed from multi-step reactions involving L-arginine, glycine, and L-methionine in the kidneys and liver. Creatine is then transported to muscle tissue. Creatine supplementation is used to enhance exercise performance, mainly by increasing muscle mass.
