General description

Evans Blue (EB) C I. 23860 is a synthetic diazo dye, also known as T-1824 and Direct Blue 53. EB dyes with high water solubility have a strong affinity for serum albumin and are a high molecular weight protein tracer.

application

Evans blue is a well-known and important staining agent suitable for histology and fluorescence microscopy. Evans blue has been used to examine cell viability and study the permeability of the blood-brain barrier (BBB). Other applications include displaying specific types of pituitary cells, selective staining of neutrophil plasma membranes, and acting as a quencher in fluorescence microscopy to suppress unnecessary autofluorescence.

Biochemical/physiological effects

Evans blue is a non penetrating dye. When there is damage to the plasma membrane, dyes can enter the cytoplasm and nucleus and dye them blue. Evans blue can be used to check cell viability. It can also be used to study the permeability of the blood-brain barrier (BBB). The dye binds to albumin, indicating that BBB has been broken down into proteins.
