Guanosine 3’5’-cyclic Monophosphate, also known as cGMP, is an important intracellular second messenger that has been shown to interact with the extracellular signals nitric oxide and natriuretic peptides, as well as mediate their action. cGMP interacts with the receptors cGMP-dependent protein kinases, cGMP-regulated channels, and cGMP-regulated cyclic nucleotide phosphodiesterases. The compound can activate protein kinase G, and it has been shown that elevated levels of cGMP in vivo stimulates cGMP-dependent protein kinase (PKG). Research shows that cGMP can suppress apoptosis in rat ovarian follicles, and that it is metabolized quickly in the presence of corresponding phosphodiesterases.
