身上，出现慢性呼吸道感染，进而演变成慢性肺炎；在免疫力缺失的癌症患者或严重的烧伤病人身上，则出现急性的肺炎或菌毒血症。院内感染绿脓杆菌所引起的肺炎或菌毒血症，致死率更高达70％，其中主要的致病因子是绿脓杆菌外毒素Ａ（Pseudomonas exotoxin Ａ，简称PE）。 绿脓杆菌外毒素Ａ是绿脓杆菌所分泌的毒素中毒性最强的，它可以抑制真核细胞蛋白质合成，是引起患者发生肝中毒，病情急速恶化甚至死亡的主因，95％以上由临床分离出来的绿脓杆菌都会分泌这种毒素。
