NIH/3T3 is a fibroblast cell line that was isolated from a mouse NIH/Swiss embryo. This cell line is highly sensitive to sarcoma virus focus formation and leukemia virus propagation and has proven to be very useful in DNA transfection studies. This cell line is a multiclonal population and we no longer test this cell line for contact inhibition. Please refer to note under specific applications for additional information and new clonal cell line maintaining contact inhibition.

General
Specific applications - This cell line is multiclonal and there are distinguishable clonal aberrations presented. This cell line contains subclonal population of cells that are prone to cell transformation. Although the original cells are extremely contact inhibited, the cell line has gradually lost this characteristic due to the above reason [PMID:2928308; PMID:11221858]. We no longer test this cell line for contact inhibition. A newly developed clonal cell line, that exhibits true characteristics of contact inhibition will be available in early 2024.
